the fact that this 12 yr old boy from a loving family on a teeny tiny island somewhere on the edge of the world goes to take on one of the deadliest exams to ever have existed, sees people dying left and right and HE DOESNT EVEN BAT A FUCKING EYE
he sees his best friend ripping out somebodys heart with his bare hands, sees hisoka straight up murdering people for absolutely no reason other than that he CAN, and even accepted the death of an applicant in order to steal hisokas badge
hxh teaches us very early on that the hunter universe is a cruel, cruel place where a man’s life is practically worth nothing, and it doesnt surprise that gons friends are absolutely aware of that – killua, who was confronted with murder since he can walk, kurapika, who found the slaughtered corpses of everybody he ever knew, and leorio, who came from such an impoverished region that he had not only witness his friend but very likely a lot of other people die before his very eyes.
but GON – how did all this not effect gon at all? there might be things we do not know about whale island, but everything we saw about his home was peace and a loving upbringing. yes, there was kite killing the kitsuneguma (a scene which also did not exist in the beginning of 2011 of reasons i will never understand) and gon certainly learned one thing or two about the circle of life while roaming the woods – but isnt the hunter exam a whole different realm of cruelty?
i remember watching 2011 for the first time – it was half a year before i slumped into the fandom. and the reason it took me so long to connect to this outstanding narrative was because i could not connect to gon – partly because of his motivation for leaving his family and risking his life (which i in hindsight blame the poor first episode of 2011 for), but mostly because i was so disturbed that i didnt see this child freak out witnessing all the murder around him
i think gon, although he radiates with positivety and childlike interest, is a very conflicting character. i feel that his innocent and cute moments often cover up how right kurapika might have been with his assessment why hisoka grew so fond of gon – because that ruthless murderer saw the little boy as someone of his caliber, a like-minded being of sorts. gon shows pity, gon shows care and the will to fight and protect – but only towards certain people, people he seems to divide from those who he is not willing to bestow with the same priviledge following criteria only he seems to know.
i love the gon character, i love how thorough it is written that these traits introduced at the very beginning of the series foreshadow the catastrophy of gon-san.
but that boy still scares me
Like I know we all joke as “Leorio was chosen as a Zodiac because he punched Ging and told a whole audience he was jerking off” but there’s so much more to this choice
Leorio punched Ging (a person no one likes, sure) because of Ging not caring for his dying son. The whole audience later yells at Ging for not being a good father. When they cheer at Leorio for punching him it’s not just because he punched an unlikable guy, but also because it was fundamentally because Leorio cared so much about one person and would go against those who wouldn’t care enough.
When he makes his whole speech about what he’d do if he was chairman, he does a whole speech about “I’ll use this power to my own gain. I’ll help my friend”. He opened his heart and was honest over what he was doing (studying medecine, which in itself is quite selfless), and also while chosing awareness for what his friend was going through.
What I mean is that, every public appearance Leorio made was always talking about how he was as a person, each time he repeated it was “his own gain” – and this own gain was Being Aware of the people’s trouble, Caring, Trying to find solutions to people in danger, and going against those who wouldn’t care about it.
Popularity definetly entered in Cheadle’s judgement when she picked him as a Zodiac, but as a whole, said popularity was not created entierely on the back of the Hating Ging movement, but on how Leorio was a caring person who’ll fight for the interest of others.
Cheadle being herself a Hunter who’s specialized in Medicine, she more than likely saw the potential in Leorio. (Not to mention that even Leorio’s technique used against Ging is analysed later by Ging as a technique made for medicine, and it’s likely Cheadle figured that as well).
Leorio was chosen because of his selflessness and his way to fight for it, and I’m so proud of him
The Zodiacs are escorting Beyond Netero, and want to turn the DC into a place to hunt with the success of this first mission. Beyond Netero is currently under their custody. On stake is the trust of the Hunter Association’s most valued clients, and V6 pressures them into making sure Beyond’s expedition does not succeed.
Kurapika’s goals, for the most part, align with the Zodiacs (as he is replacing Pariston), however, his true goal is to retrieve the Kurta Eyes from the fourth Prince of Kakin, Tserriednich. For that he has assembled a party of friends who infiltrated the ship as hired bodyguards for five different Princes. Kurapika himself, trying to find the ninth Prince of Kakin, Harkenburg, has found himself bodyguard of the fourteenth Princeand pledged to protect him. He also bears a strong grudge and is in a state of open hostility with thePhantom Troupe. The exception is Hisoka Morow who provided him with invaluable information regarding the Troupe in the past.
The Traitor, or traitors among the Zodiacs are supporting Beyond Netero for unknown reasons. It can be assumed he planted them in the Association and prepared them for this expedition for years. One of the traitors is Saiyu “Monkey”, the Zodiac.
Beyond Netero’s expedition team, funded by King Nasubi, are leading Kakin into the DC to make history and transform the Dark Continent into a place humans can live in. He hired Pariston as his Number 2, butGing (who is also part of the expedition party) has split the team into two factions: Those that accept Ging’s money and him as the new Number 2, and those which do not. Pariston seemed to have had some plans which Gings actions have foiled.
Pariston Hill, on his own, almost certainly has different motives than Beyond Netero and is also in control of a army of Chimera Soldiers, which may or may not come into play during the expedition. Pariston also wants to make Ging hate him as he hates Ging himself.
Ging Freecss is, on top of being part of the expedition team, on the Hunt for his relative, Don Freecss and the book which he is (presumably) still writing. He is willing to spend a large amount of money to become the new Number 2 which could mean he has some plans or knowledge concerning Beyond Netero. Hisoka is interested in fighting him.
Hisoka Morow is currently hunting the Phantom Troupe, who believe him to have perished in his fight with Chrollo. He let Machi escape to warn the Troupe but has already taken the lives of two Phantom Troupe Members and has declared to make sure they won’t have the choice who or where they will have to fight anymore. He is most likely targeting Kalluto as well, which could cause complications with Illumi, who is affiliated with both Hisoka and the Phantom Troupe, and the rest of the Zoldyck Family. He is, however, not targeted by Kurapika despite being a former Phantom Troupe Member. He is on bad terms with some of theZodiacs and interested to fight Ging.
The Phantom Troupe is planning to infiltrate and meet up at the ship and steal from the Princes. Seeing as Kurapika did not know of the war of succession until he was hired, they are most likely heading into the War ignorant of the forces that each Prince has assembled. Chrollo Lucifer and most of the Phantom Troupe also currently believe Hisoka to be dead, though he let Machi live to spread the word. There may also be a new Member replacing the former #8, and one of the Members is part of the Zoldyck Family. They bear a grudge against Kurapika for killing Uvogin and Paku, some Members more so than others.
The Zoldyck Family have, in the past, participated in expeditions to the DC. One of the Family Members,Kalluto, is currently part of the Phantom Troupe and may be targeted by both Hisoka and Kurapika. Silva is mistrustful and on bad terms with the Phantom Troupe and Chrollo specifically, while Illumi is friends withHisoka and has been hired by Chrollo in the past. As they are a family of Assassins, they may be hired by any of the other Powers on the ship, including the Kakin Princes.
The Kakin Princes are about to start a war of succession on the ship. Some of the Princes look forward to this and have meticulously prepared forces designed to wipe out a army of Nen Users on the level of Pro Hunters. The princes the story focused on so far are the fourth Prince, who is in possession of the Kurta Eyes, the ninth Prince Harkenburg, and the sixth, seventh, tenth, twelvfth, thirteenth Princes who hired Izunavi, Basho, Melody, Hanzo and Biscuit respectively and the fourteenth Prince, who is under Kurapika’sprotection. They also need to keep up social appearances in order to avoid a mass panic of bystanders.
The bystanders admire King Nasubi, are ignorant of the dangers the BC poses and run danger to being caught up in the war of succession. They include the common population of Kakin who have drawn a ticket for the first ship, and most likely a number of politicians and various other rich and influential people.
Tl;dr this is going to be a merciless slaughter which will make the CAA look cute. And we haven’t even reached the Dark Continent.

KILLUA GOING OUT OF HIS WAY TO HELP IKALGO OUT THOUGH
AND IKALGO SORTOF COMFORTING KILLUA RIGHT AFTER I M E AN
If I may take this already lovely long scan post to make a little point about the CA arc…
I’ve heard reasonable and salient points made about how the parallel between Gon and Meruem is the heart of the arc. No question! But, one thing I think I expressed about this fact that I think is a mistake is the idea that Meruem becomes human, and Gon becomes inhuman.
I think it’s more accurate to say that Meruem is always human and monster, and so too is Gon….because Humans ARE monsters.
More precisely, humans are capable of the best and the worst impulses of behavior because it’s tied so entirely to our singular, emotion-fueled wills. Unlike ants, or animals, with baser instincts (an: I don’t think animals are baser, but it’s a plot point in CA that there’s a line between ant-ant and human-ant) humans make decisions based on their emotions, no matter how rational they attempt or pretend to be.
Killua in this moment is demonstrating this point to a tee, and it’s really pertinent foreshadowing for Gon’s actions later. Gon lets go of rationality, or making any kind of reasonable sense, in order to indulge his emotion packed, all too human desire for revenge.
“But you’re pissed.” Leorio pointed to the scowl curving
Kurapika’s mouth down in response. “Look! You’re completely pissed
off!”
“But not at you,” Kurapika said, lifting his coffee and taking a slow drink.
Leorio waited, his own mug still between his hands but fortunately
safely on the table, watching Kurapika’s eyes stare to the side without
meeting his. “You’re gonna have to elaborate.”
In which some discoveries are made.
Spring Haze, Chapter 11 Fandom: Hunter x Hunter Pairings: Leopika (feat. Trans!Leorio) + cute and platonic Killugon = Family, also some Amane/Canary on the side Word Count (current chapter): 5,566 (total): 76,366 Content warnings: implied/referenced child abuse, transgender issues and other gender issues, some mild fantasy violence and mild supernatural creepyness in later chapters, non-explicit smut in later chapters, mild language overall Summary: Leorio wakes up in the back of a pickup truck in an RV park in the middle of nowhere, with no memory of how he got there. He accidentally befriends a peculiar shut-in and a pair of runaways, but the more his attempts to get home are thwarted, the less all of this seems like a simple coincidence.
A strange modern fairy tale AU about the family you choose.
