3am and catboy killua is bored so he’s yowling: reactions
leorio throws a pillow at the door because goddamn it you terrible asshole, he has to be up at 5 for work. killua hisses and scratches the floor as he runs away.
all of kurapika’s eyes open. the glow can be seen from down the block. killua shuts up immediately. he flees down the hallway at top speed and crawls under the couch.
gon blinks blearily and rolls out from under his heat lamp. why is killua making a noise. no. killua. killua stop. killua please he’s so sleepy. it’s dark out please do not make a noise. an hour later they’re curled up together all nice and toasty and killua doesn’t even want to make a noise. look at this weird cat and lizard. they’re in love.
hxh au where illumi intervened canary and gons fight during the zoldyck family arc and captured gon. He erased his memories of the hunter exam, and hired him as a servant to prove to killua assasins dont need friends (read more about it here)
Oh, blimey, thank you! And thanks for taking the time to send a message.
I agree that he’s not at all pure – see psychological torture, smashing prosthetic leg, etc. And I do think he doesn’t really have a frame of reference for what might be abusive/ a ‘wrong’ way to treat a child and what wouldn’t – except comparing it to Mito’s treatment of him, since he says there was only one other kid on whale island. So essentially I agree!
I guess that also – and I realise this is meta/fanon, I like to imagine that he was able to recognise Killua’s abuse for what it was (and here being an assassin is part and parcel of that, at least imo – for example you would not necessarily blame or fault a child soldier for finding themselves in an environment in which they were forced to kill or die/ be hurt, and that’s where Killua finds himself.) Partly as part of entering the big wide world and learning a range of things, and partly for the emotional maturity he does boast from the beginning as he’s learned it from Mito, I imagine Gon learning to understand what constitutes abuse and the way that it matches Killua’s account of his childhood.
I guess the trick, at least in my thinking, is that recognising abuse isn’t the same as making a moral judgement. Lots of abuse victims care deeply about their abusers – often family members, and lots of abusers, believe it or not, care deeply about their victims. There’s a whole complex framework attached to abuse, and so though it’s tempting when angry or sad, trying to apply labels of right and wrong is rarely appropriate. Many abuse victims would be deeply distressed to hear their friends labelling, for example, their parents as ‘evil’ or ‘bad’, despite treatment they might have endured.
I agree Gon would not label it as good/bad exactly. However, in that spectrum of grey morality we do see that he reacts, passionately, to people hurting or threatening his friends – in his concern for them and vengeance on their behalf, for example with Zushi.
When it comes to abuse, often the greatest support someone can offer a victim is a) to believe them, which Gon does without hesitation and which we see from Killua’s delighted and overwhelmed reaction, means a great deal to him. b) To give them space and time, which Gon does. and c) – and this isn’t so much about support but reaction – to accept that they were indeed hurt by their treatment: physically, emotionally and psychologically. Clearly Gon recognises that Killua was hurt – that doesn’t necessitate a value judgement, just taking Killua at his word. And, (and here I will accept is my fanon head talking) Gon responds to that, is protective of him, is angry and distressed by Killua’s treatment (though we see that explicitly in the hunter exam) and wants to act on it.
Ooooh now I’ve just thought out loud for a little longer than I meant to – sorry! But yes – agreed that Gon is at best grey when it comes to morality and verging on amoral, but I don’t think that abuse or abusive treatment is so much about abstract labels or judgements of morality as it is about the treatment, harm and protection of individuals. And we do see that Gon’s concern for his friends is one of his primary motivators and ‘moral’ guides.
blargh ok I just lost this so I’mma just run through this quickly. tw: mentions of abuse and torture.
Was anyone else stunned by Gon’s seriously, slightly scary sadism in episode 34 in the Heaven’s arena arc? Because it seems to me, at least, it was about revenge for Killua, and that’s fascinating and terrifying.
so dave and I were talking about his hxh gem au and of course I focused on alluka and nanika’s dynamics with each other.
Nanika (Schorl/Black Tourmaline) would probably not have a stable form and be alone until meeting Alluka (Rubellite/Pink Tourmaline). Rubellite’s special abilities include sensing and transmitting emotions via kiss so she’d give Schorl kisses whenever she feels scared of nervous. Because of her adoration for Rubellite, Schorl copies her form (though the individual hairs were hard to sopy so she just made it smooth and solid).
They end up falling in super platonic love and so they decide that it would be best for the both of them to fuse into Rhodonite so that Schorl can always feel loved and avoid being scared. It’s funny when Killua (Kyanite) is the only Zoldyck to not buy her excuse that her color scheme is so different because she regenerated recently (mostly because he’s the only one of them to care to notice she has TWO gems now)
(i was drawing these so late last night so that’s why everything is so inconsistent lol)
Tangentially, from some angles Ging looks so much like a scraggly
version of Yusuke, even though they’re almost nothing alike in
personality. What if Yusuke was Gon’s relative, or ancestor or
something? Wouldn’t that be crazy?
Amazingly, I had never thought about this before. As much as the two shows bear a lot of similarities (obvs being created by the same person) they take place in two very different universes, so. How would I mesh them up…
I suppose what would make the most sense would be if the Dark Continent was actually the Makai, which doesn’t seem too far outside the realm of possibility considering the horrifying creatures and things that have come out of the Hunter world’s contact with it. Since we know that the Makai is a vast and multilayered plane of existence that even the Prince of the Underworld doesn’t know the farthest reaches of, then the Hunter world could be a cultural isolate somewhere in the middle of an incomprehensibly vast ocean in some deep dark corner where a pocket of humanity who somehow got there (probably back in prehistory or the dark ages when there was no barrier between the worlds) has lived and thrived for a few millennia with no memory of Earth.
That was more worldbuilding than I intended to do just for the hell of it but whatevs let’s roll with that.
Oh, thank you very very much! That’s incredibly kind of you.
Here is a thing that is important to know about me – I tend to not read a ton of fics in fandoms I write for. This is even more of a thing now that I have a hard time remembering stuff. I tend to do a single swoop through the fandom reading fics. If among those, I find fics that do what I’m looking for (which is often absurdly specific), I’m sated. If not… I write them myself. I really don’t want to steal people’s ideas, so I avoid them if I can once I start writing (this includes headcanons – I can’t really follow people who post a ton, otherwise I get my own ideas mixed up).
The only reason I say this is because my rec list is shorter than it might otherwise be, since there are a lot of talented writers.
And Time Will Have His Fancy – this is just a brief little series, but I love it so much, and I think it deserves more attention.
Report Card – I absolutely love the way perspective is played with in this story. It’s excellent.
Scars x and x Souls is a unique twist on the soulmate AU that I like. Dark & Tender is also a reunion fic by the same writer. It focuses on Gon, which I greatly appreciate.
Pretty much everything by Gee Writes. A lot of AUs, and my favorite is the ongoing one about Gon being Killua’s nanny.

Comment: My god, everyone needs to go and read this right now. It’s so cute. It’s so fluffy. It’s so dudes being dudes and I LOVED IT SO MUCH. Hilarious, adorable oneshot, and both Gon and Killua are so in-sync with their characters.
i think shalnark is my favorite troupe member because he’s so deceptively portrayed
he’s this really chill happy kind of dude and so your automatic thoughts about him are really positive
but really he’s one of the most ruthless and immoral members, completely on par with feitan. he’s always smiling even when he’s mowing down dozens of people. it’s a game to him, and he’s not so childish and immature that he doesn’t understand that it shouldn’t be.
he’s bubbly and cheerful and he knows exactly what he’s doing when he’s murdering people. he’s not an original member of the troupe, so we don’t know how he became part of the group. he’s incredibly intelligent and is a pro hunter. he’s endearing most of all.
the reason he’s so upset about using autopilot is that he doesn’t get to remember murdering people. he’s morally bankrupt, and that’s why he can be so cheerful and have so many traits we view positively. he’s happy because he doesn’t care.
